Community Development Briefing
Issue 1, January 2001

WELCOME to the first briefing paper for churches and projects engaged in community development. I hope this will become a lively means of us all sharing our experience, opinions and information. We are sending the first edition to parishes who have expressed an interest in community development and community projects in the diocese - but if you know of anyone missed off the list, please let us know and we'll add them.

What will it be?

The format will be:

  • INFORMATION - on community involvement, using your buildings, keeping legal, decent and honest, current initiatives

  • SHARING STORIES - the ups and downs of hands-on community involvement. One profile per edition, plus other interesting stories

  • RESOURCES - People, publications and other resources to support you in your work

  • NOTICE BOARD - events and training, contacts, items for sale, jobs, "wanted"…etc

Above all, I hope Community Works will be INTERACTIVE, and that you will contribute and respond. There will many many opportunities for dialogue - I hope! So please use it - it will only be as good and as useful as you all make it.

How often?

3 times a year, one each term - that is, for liturgical calendar users, Epiphany, Pentecost and Michaelmas (approximately….).

Who am I?

Photo of Jill McKinnonAs Diocesan Community Development Adviser, I'm Community Works editor and co-ordinator - which also means nagger for copy. My job includes working with parishes and projects hands-on in the development of their community involvement, and keeping track of and resourcing community initiatives across the diocese, with a particular (but not exclusive) focus on urban issues. Follow this link to find out what I can offer - so do contact me if you think I may be useful to you.

So how do you contribute to Community Works?

Deadline for copy for the next edition will be MONDAY 23 APRIL 2001. So please send - or even better, e-mail stuff to me at jill.mckinnon@dswark.org.uk or Wendy Arden-White, at wendy.arden-white@dswark.org.uk or by post to Trinity House, 4 Chapel Court, Borough High Street, SE1 1HW. Use the headings - information - stories - resources - notice board - as guidelines. We look forward to receiving the mountains of mail!!
