Jubilee at Southwark Cathedral
The
Queen has asked that on June 2nd all Cathedrals should have events to mark the
Jubilee. Southwark Cathedral, in partnership with the Trustees of the Borough
Market and the Bankside Residents, will be holding events from 11am
-11pm.
There
will be jugglers, stilt and tightrope walkers food on sale in the market, steel
bands etc. Designed to celebrate the many communities in South London, this
will be a time for people to come and mark the Queen's jubilee in a South
London carnival atmosphere. The Cathedral will offer a place of quiet
reflection throughout the day as well as special services, including Jubilee
Songs of Praise at 3pm.
Do come along and join in the
fun!' More information next

Churches Together in Britain and Ireland have produced
a worship resource booklet for use on Sunday 2 June.
It
includes a service which is complete except for hymns. From the beginning of
May the service itself, but not all of the resources, will be available on the
CTBI website: jubilee@ctbi.org.uk.
The booklet is available from CTBI Jubilee,
Inter-Church House, 35-41 Lower Marsh, London, SE1 7SA, tel. 020 7523 2121, and
from the offices of the national Ecumenical Bodies, at £ 2.50 each (or
£22.50 for ten). 5 copies of the Order of Service will cost £5.
(Both include p&p).
Bring the St Paul's service to your
church.
The
Golden Jubilee Service at 11.30am in St Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday 4 June,
attended by HM the Queen, is being broadcast live by the BBC. St Paul's
Cathedral has given permission for local church congregations to set up large
screen television projectors or multiple televisions so that they can join in
the service. Churches might invite local community leaders, include a bring and
share lunch, and ring a celebration peal of bells. The BBC is producing a guide
on how to screen a television service in church. Provided no video recordings
are made and entrance is free of charge, St. Paul's Cathedral say there are no
copyright issues. If there is enough support, the BBC guide will be available
through a link with the Golden Jubilee Website, together with details of the
initiative, a guide to getting good local publicity, and an order form for
commemorative hymn sheets. Churches should register their interest by logging on
to the Oxford Diocesan website, www.oxford.anglican.org, or writing to the Bishop of
Dorchester.
Double jubilee is Shirley.
In
1977, when the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, St. George the Martyr,
Shirley, celebrated 40 years of church life and 25 years of the church building
in Elstan Way. The 2002 joint 'jubilee', begins with a Flower Festival "A Time
to Rejoice", on 4, 5 and 6 May (10 am to 6 pm on Friday and Saturday and 12
noon to 6 pm on Sunday) with displays arranged by children, the congregation
and the local community.
The Jubilee annual City Churches Walk
...will
take place over Friday and Saturday 6 June, with 37 city churches open. It will
end with a concert at St Sepulchre, Holborn on Saturday evening. Details from
020 7626 1555, or email: friendsoflondoncitychurches@yahoo.com.
