The Lambeth Conference -
Anglican Bishops visiting Southwark Cathedral

For the Diocese of Southwark, the weekend of 12/13 July is an unparalleled opportunity to worship together with brothers and sisters from across the Anglican Communion just before the start of the Lambeth Conference at Canterbury. The Archbishop of Canterbury and Bishop Tom have given permission for the Cathedral to host services, using liturgy not normally authorised for our use and during that weekend there will be three special services.

On Saturday 12 July, members of the Papua New Guinea community will be gathering for a day conference with their Bishops. At noon there will be a Eucharist, celebrated according to the Rite of the Church of Papua New Guinea, where the preacher will be Archbishop James Ayong, the Bishop of Aipo Rongo and Primate of the Province.

On Sunday 13 July, Bishop Tom will preside at the 11am Choral Eucharist and Archbishop Carlos Touché-Porter, Bishop of Mexico and primate of the Province of Mexico, will preach. They will be joined by the ten Bishops from around the Anglican Communion, and their wives, who are being hosted in our Diocese for the week leading up to the Lambeth Conference. Everyone is encouraged to come wearing national dress or clothes from their own ethnic background to show what diverse backgrounds we come.

At 6.30pm, Bishops from Zimbabwe will preside and preach at a Eucharist for the Zimbabwean community – but everyone is welcome to attend - using the rite of the Church of Zimbabwe. The service will be in the Shona language with a Zimbabwean choir.

All these services are for everyone – so come along and make the Lambeth Conference a real event; break bread with your brothers and sisters from around the world and around the Diocese.
