Lancelot Andrewes was a great scholar, preacher and saint of the 17th century. The original part of the tomb, the effigy of Andrewes and the cresting on the north side is by a Flemish refugee, Gerard Johnson. Johnson is probably better known for the Shakespeare monument at Stratford. It shows Andrewes wearing the mantle of the Order of the Garter (one of only three in the country) as the Bishops of Winchester are Prelates to the Order of the Garter.

He carries a small book which may represent his Preces Privatae, a collection of prayers he composed which are still in use today. Bishop Andrewes was the last occupant of Winchester Palace which stood just west of the church. Remains of the Palace can still be seen today, including an impressive Rose Window. The tomb used to be situated in the Retro-choir. Bishop Andrewes' last public appearance was at the coronation of King Charles I.
