As
part of our Centenary celebrations in 2005, it was decided to set
up a fund to give thanks to God for the past 100 years of the life
of the Diocese.
The Southwark Diocesan Centenary
Fund has been set up by Bishop Tom to support work with
children and young people throughout the Diocese. The Trustees
have now awarded over £60,000 in grants:
- Support for a youth trip to
Tanzania in July 2006. The church has an existing relationship
with the community in Tanzania and has worked on community
projects there in the past. The church as a whole is involved in
planning and fundraising for the trip and the Centenary Fund
grant will be used to help those young people for whom the
individual fundraising is most difficult.
- Support for a weekend
residential retreat for a church youth group in October 2006.
This annual weekend has been built up over the last five years
and in 2006 the residential will involve about 40 children plus
up to 20 disabled children from the local area.
- Re-decoration of a church room
for an existing teenage group to meet in.
- Support to enable the
continuation and expansion of a weekly service for the under 5s
from the surrounding community.
- Support for a growing annual
“celebration weekend” for young people over the next 3 years.
The celebration weekend has been part of this church’s youth
ministry since 2000 and the numbers attending are increasing
year on year.
- Seed money to develop an
outreach programme for families with young children on estates
in a parish. This funding provides the start up costs of a pilot
project that will be evaluated at the end of 2006.
- Funds to develop a week long
summer play scheme that aims to build relationships between
‘churched’ and ‘unchurched’ families.
- Support for a community group
that is working with disadvantaged children. The aim is to build
up the 5-aside football teams and the funding will cover both
staff and equipment costs for a 3 month pilot scheme.
- Support for an exhibition aimed
at primary aged children which tells of the life of Jesus. This
will be seen by up to 2,000 children from local schools.
More grants will be awarded
in 2008 and the remaining deadlines for applications are 31
January, 31 May
& 30 September.

Fundraising by the trustees will
target a number of sources including local businesses, city
institutions, grant giving organisations as well as parishes
throughout the Diocese. All applications for grants will be assessed by
the Grants Committee, which is chaired by Bishop Nick.
Roadshows
Initial publicity was through a
series of road shows, one in each archdeaconry. These road shows
aimed to give parishes the opportunity to hear about current work
with young people and to share their visions for the future. It is
hoped that they will develop enthusiasm for both the fund and for
its potential benefits for our young people.
The aim of the fund is:
'To benefit the community and to
advance the Christian faith by the provision of grants, in
particular but not exclusively, to assist the local church and
local mission by supporting projects in parishes and their
communities, Areas and Deaneries, which encourage children and
young people to be part of a life of faith, through nurturing the
development of existing work, and enabling innovative and creative
new work.'
