Curriculum Committee

Terms of Reference

To ensure that curriculum needs are clearly identified in the school development plan and make recommendations for resourcing to the Finance Committee.

To receive reports from curriculum co-ordinators on specific curriculum areas in line with the school development priorities.

In consultation with the headteacher and appropriate staff, to monitor and keep under review the following policies and ensure any amendments are presented to the governing body for approval:

  • the curriculum policy drawn up by the headteacher;
  • the policy for religious education and collective worship;
  • the sex education policy.

The Committee may wish to consider other policies (eg, those relating to curriculum subjects, pastoral care, personal, social and health education, extra-curricular activities) presented by the headteacher for review.

To receive regular reports (at least annually) from the headteacher and/or the special educational needs co-ordinator in order to:

  • (i) monitor the provision made for pupils with special educational needs (SEN);
  • (ii) keep the school's SEN policy under review and recommend any changes to the governing body for approval;
  • (iii) prepare a statement for the governors' annual report on the SEN policy and any changes to that policy

To monitor the performance of pupils and to report to the governing body by:

  • (i) considering (at least annually) the School's Performance and Assessment Data (PANDA) and any other relevant performance data;
  • (ii) in consultation with the headteacher, setting targets for national curriculum tests and public examinations;
  • (iii) receiving reports on the pupils' achievement and progress and comparing these to the targets.

In consultation with the headteacher, to keep under review the management and structure of the school day.

To determine complaints made by parents on curriculum matters where such complaints have been referred to the governing body under the LEA complaints procedure.

To determine any appeal made by a parent or request by the headteacher for a pupil's temporary withdrawal from part of the national curriculum (disapplication).

To report the Committee's resolutions and recommendations to the next full meeting of the governing body.

To keep the terms of reference under review and recommend any changes to the governing body prior to the annual review of committees.

To determine any other matters referred to the Committee by the governing body.
