Further and Higher Education

The Education Chaplaincy Development Officer supports the work of further and higher education chaplaincy. Where chaplaincies have not been established the officer works with colleges across the Diocese to build links with local faith communities and to ensure that students and staff of all faiths are valued and supported within the college environment.

The Board supports those working and studying in the colleges and universities and particularly the work of chaplains through its Further and Higher Education Committee.

Faiths in Higher Education Chaplaincy

A major report commissioned by the Church of England and supported by many of the main faith communities in the UK, published on 15th January 2008, offers a tutorial in the valuable work of university and college chaplains up and down the country. Among a range of insights and recommendations, it calls on Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and the government to continue to invest in chaplaincies to help them further their significant contribution to social cohesion.

Network for Inter Faith Concerns (NIFCON)

The Church of England is also in touch with inter faith issues internationally through being a member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which includes churches in very diverse situations of religious plurality. Within the Anglican Communion, NIFCON links those in different provinces with a particular concern for inter faith relations, and coordinates news and resources in this area. A useful NIFCON resource is 'Generous Love: the truth of the Gospel and the call to dialogue'. Sub titled 'An Anglican theology of inter faith relations' this short treatise is the culmination of work in which NIFCON has been engaged over the last four years.

Presence and Engagement: the churches' task in a multi Faith society

Issues of inter faith relations are mainstream concerns for Government and society. This report, produced for the July 2005 General Synod debate, focuses on the situation of churches in multi Faith neighbourhoods.

Inter Faith Network UK

Works to build good relations between the communities of all the major faiths in Britain: Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Zoroastrian. The Bishop of Southwark is currently one of the two Co-Chairs of the Network.
