Training
Governors' Programme
The Board offers a range of training opportunities for governors of Church of England schools in the Diocese: this leaflet outlines what is available.
Diocesan Training
This type of training is organised by the Diocesan Board for specific groups of governors, eg, new governors, or on specific topics; a summary of the current programme is provided opposite.
School-Based Training
This is a popular form of training for many schools because it meets the specific needs of the governing body. Some issues may lend themselves to joint governing body and staff training. The school-based training on offer from the Diocesan Board is described on the back of this leaflet; other issues may be covered on request. The Board will also arrange group trainings between local schools at a reduced rate.
The Cost
Diocesan Training
Free to schools in the Service Agreement. Other schools £50.00 per person.
School-based training
£90 per hour (schools in Service Agreement).
£125 per hour (for other schools).
How to apply
Separate flyers giving further details of the Diocesan training sessions opposite together with a reply slip are sent to schools each term. The closing dates for each session are normally 2 weeks prior to the course date. Programmes are sent out 10 days before each session, if you do not receive a programme, please telephone Sheila Talbott on 020 7234 9206.
Bishop's Certificate in Church School Governance
This ten module course, endorsed by the Bishop of Southwark, aims to clarify the role of the governing body in C of E schools. It will not cover every aspect of school governance, but will give participants a good understanding of certain key issues for church school governors. The Bishop of Southwark is keen to acknowledge the important role played by governors of church schools in the Diocese. The Certificate will be awarded to those governing bodies which have sent at least two governors on seven of the modules and will be valid for four years. The Certificate is not available for individuals.
