Scheme of Work
The scheme of work for Religious Education builds upon this previous guidance and enables schools to provide a syllabus that gives pupils an understanding of Creation, Prayer and Worship, the Church, the Life and Teachings of Jesus, Old Testament characters, Living out the Faith and Christian Festivals. Whilst the majority of the scheme covers aspects of teaching about Christianity, there are also specific units of work for Judaism and Islam, covering the programmes of study identified in the previous guidance. The scheme consists of half termly units that contain medium term plans with an average of six lessons and sufficient material for the Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1 and 2. This guidance addresses the two attainment targets that are common to most syllabuses and are described in the non-statutory National Framework for Religious Education, October 2005 as Learning about Religion, AT1 and Learning from Religion AT2 Explanation of these Attainment Targets and level Descriptors relating to them can be found on pages 34-38 of the non-statutory National Framework for Religious Education on the Qualifications and Curriculum Agency website www.qca.org.uk. Many of the Voluntary Aided Diocesan schools have now used units from this scheme to design their school syllabus. It is important to monitor its effectiveness and make changes accordingly. In response to feedback and discussions on assessment for learning at regular RE subject leaders conferences, an assessment focus has been suggested relating to AT1 and AT2 for each half term unit. Teachers have found these help raise their own understanding of the skills and concepts they are to teach, encourage them to get the balance right between AT1 and AT2 and provide opportunities to assess their pupils’ attainment. A method for recording attainment at the end of each unit is also given. As soon as anything is published it becomes out of date! It is hoped that teachers using this material will give feedback and provide details of new resources which they have found helpful. By putting the material on the website it is hoped that teachers can really make it their own, use it as a basis for their lesson plans, add columns for "learning intention" "learning outcome" "key Questions" "evaluation" etc.. However the scheme is used we hope it will help teachers feel confident and enthusiastic about teaching RE and help pupils develop deep interest and personal inspiration as they learn.
