Schools Committee Membership and Terms of Reference
1. The Schools Committee shall have the following membership:
A Chair appointed by the Chair of the Board of Education and confirmed by the Schools Committee;
Three headteachers or teachers appointed by the Board of Education to represent secondary and primary schools, not more than two of whom shall be appointed from either sector;
A school governor who is a member of the Board of Education;
The Chair of the Finance and General Purposes Committee;
Four members appointed by the Board, of whom at least two shall be members of the Board of Education;
The Chair of the Southwark Diocesan Headteachers' Association;
Two headteachers serving in the Diocese nominated by the Southwark Diocesan Headteachers' Association, one to represent the inner boroughs and one to represent the outer boroughs;
One member from the Further and Higher Education Committee, appointed by the Committee;
Four co-opted members, one of whom shall be a representative of a minority ethnic group and another shall be a representative of Whitelands College;
A headteacher serving in the Diocese for a one-year term of office.
2. The Terms of Reference shall be as follows:
(i) To develop policies statements on matters relating to Church of England schools and to keep under review the major issues and developments in education in order to advise the Board on appropriate courses of action.
(ii) To consider the needs of those responsible for the governance of Church of England schools in the Diocese and to organise courses for induction and in-service training.
(iii) To appoint Foundation Governors to governing bodies as representatives of the Diocesan Board of Education.
(iv) To provide a forum for debate and discussion on matters relevant to the future development of education and specifically as it relates to Church of England schools.
(v) To promote and support the effectiveness of Church of England schools in the Diocese with particular reference to Religious Education and Worship.
To keep under review primary and secondary school provision in the Diocese.
(vii) To take note of the appointment and movement of staff in schools.
(viii) To make representation on behalf of the Board end Diocesan schools, within the context of the Board's role and purpose, to those organisations and agencies that relate to the field of education.
(ix) To provide an annual overview on the major and minor building and development projects for Diocesan schools.
(x) To monitor, through:
Reports on Section 5 inspection and performance data, on the quality of education in Diocesan schools;
Section 48 (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools) reports on Religious Education, Collective Worship, and the provision of spiritual and moral development of pupils;
The inclusiveness of Diocesan schools with regard to racial harmony, provision for minority ethnic pupils and levels of inclusion.
(xi) To review annually the work of Agreed Syllabus Conferences and Standing Advisory Councils of Religious Education in the Diocese.
