Southwark Diocese Ordained Local Ministry Scheme (OLM) was one of the first to be established and now has 85 candidates on or through its books.
Selection for OLM is distinctive because both the individual and the parish are being selected. The parish should be committed to collaborative ministry where the gifts of all are encouraged to be used. The OLM is part of a group of people - a "ministry team", providing a focus for ministry in the parish as well as supporting the OLM. The scheme is demanding, challenging and rewarding. Candidates are offered an opportunity to study theology and to think deeply across a wide range of issues. Placements in different environments add immensely to experience and understanding. There is continual support from pastoral and academic tutors as well as from the parish ministry team and peer group. Once ordained the OLMs return to share in the ministry of their local parish where their experience of the local community can help enrich its ministry and mission as part of a team of people, lay and ordained.
