Ministry & Training

Ordained Ministry

There are three orders of clerical ministry in the Church of England: bishops, priests and deacons. They are one of God's many gifts to his Church for the salvation of the world.

Deacons are ordained to serve both in the Church and in the wider community. Deacons preach, teach and may baptise. They may have a particular care for the vulnerable and marginalised. Deacons are usually ordained priest after a year or so, being called then to build up the Body of Christ by the celebration of the sacraments, by preaching, teaching and pastoral care. Both deacons and priests may be stipendiary (paid) or non-stipendiary and both must be ordained by a duly consecrated Bishop.

The majority of ordained clergy serve in the parishes of the Diocese. Some are also chaplains, in prisons, schools and hospitals, and some are professed religious.

If you think that God is calling you to ordained ministry see Exploring your call for more information from the Diocese of Southwark, or see the national Church of England information.
