A busy patronal festival for Southwark Cathedral
15 Sep 2011
Evensong in Southwark Cathedral on Sunday 11 September was more than usually busy. The Acting Dean, Canon Andrew Nunn and the Cathedral's Director of Music, Peter Wright, welcomed new choristers to both the boys and girls choirs; promoted some of the boys to being head choristers and helped the rest of the congregation to say goodbye to three boys whose time as trebles with the choir had come to an end.
After this the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, licensed the Revd Jonathan Osborne, Senior Chaplain to the Metropolitan Police as Public Preacher and installed the Revd Leanne Roberts as the Canon Treasurer of Southwark Cathedral. She will also be the Diocesan Director of Ordinands.Leanne was previously Chaplain to Hertford College, Oxford.
During his sermon Bishop Christopher spoke of the role that Leanne will have in accompanying individuals on their 'journey as they seek to understand what the Lord might want of them'. In remembering the devastation which had been caused in parts of Southwark Diocese during the recent riots he expressed thanks and appreciation for the police's vocation to serve the communities in which we live.On the day on which the world remembered September 11, 2001 Bishop Christopher urged everyone to re-dedicate themselves to building communities characterised by faith, hope and love.
Speaking after the service Canon Leanne Roberts said, I am excited to be beginning my new ministry here in Southwark Diocese and look forward to working with those who are seeking God's direction for their lives and especially look forward to encouraging younger people as they consider how best to serve God in our fast changing world.'
