News from the Diocese of Southwark
New Archdeacon of Lambeth
21 Apr 2013
The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun has appointed the Revd Simon Gates to be the next Archdeacon of Lambeth. He succeeds the Venerable Chris Skilton who has become the Archdeacon of Croydon.
Simon Gates (53) is the Vicar of St Thomas with St Stephen, Telford Park, and Area Dean of Lambeth South Deanery in the Diocese of Southwark. He was ordained Deacon in 1987 and Priest in 1988. He served his title at St John’s Southall, in London Diocese. He then became Associate Minister of St Andrew’s Kowloon in Hong Kong before moving to Telford Park. He is married to Helen and has three children and enjoys hiking, gardening, and cooking for others. He is leading a group of young people from his parish to China this summer where they will work in an orphanage. In order to fundraise for this trip they are undertaking the three peaks challenge in June.
Speaking of his appointment, Simon Gates said, ‘I am delighted to accept Bishop Christopher’s invitation to serve as the Archdeacon of Lambeth. Lambeth is a thriving Archdeaconry, and I consider it a privilege to be asked to serve many vibrant churches with innovative ministry and mission. One of the things that excites me about this move is getting to know better the clergy and churches in the Archdeaconry and I ask for prayer that I may be worthy of the calling’.
Bishop Christopher says, ‘Simon Gates is a very experienced parish priest and has shown his passion for mission while serving as Area Dean of Lambeth. His appointment completes the team of Archdeacons within the Diocese. I am confident he is well equipped to give encouragement and support as we take forward the implementation of the Diocesan ‘Strategy for Ministry’ and identify the many signs of growth in our churches.
The Bishop of Kingston, The Rt Revd Dr Richard Cheetham says, ‘Stephen Roberts, the Archdeacon of Wandsworth, and I are very much looking forward to Simon joining the Team here in Kingston. He will bring his own skills and gifts to this demanding role and will ably build on the work started by his predecessor, Chris Skilton, in keeping the parishes and clergy in good heart and focussed on sharing the Good News of Christ.’
