Christopher Marlowe Remembered at Deptford

The Church of St Nicholas, Deptford will be holding a service of celebration for Christopher Marlowe on Tuesday 5 Feb at 11.30am - the date they believe to be his birthday. The 16th century poet and dramatist is buried in St Nicholas' churchyard and a laurel branch will be laid at the plaque commemorating him. David Haig, the well known actor, will read from his works, and suitable hymns, prayers and music will make up the service.

Those invited are representatives from the Marlowe Society, Trinity House, Corpus Christi College, The Kings School Canterbury, The Society of Kentish Men and Men of Kent, as well as the Mayors of Lewisham and Greenwich and the Bishop of Southwark, and many Cathedral and local clergy.

Canon Graham Corneck, Vicar of St Nicholas, welcomes all to the service and is happy to offer mulled wine and nibbles afterwards. As part of the service is outside, warm clothing is recommended.

St Nicholas' is known not only as Marlowe's resting place but also as the pivotal church to the Naval Dockyard nearby. Queen Elizabeth I, Pepys, Evelyn, Drake, Frobisher, Raleigh and the Duke of Wellington all worshipped in the church, and Trinity House was founded just to the east side of the churchyard.
