The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler will ordain 20 candidates as deacons on Sunday 29 September. Of the new deacons (29 September) four will be full-time stipendiary (paid). Nine will be non-stipendiary (NSM), and seven will be ordained local ministers (OLM), who are also non-stipendiary but can serve only in their local church. They will serve their curacy at the parishes indicated:

Brief Biographies

Pamela (Pat) Alden, 60, is married to Les. She will serve as Hon Curate at St Giles w St Matthew, Camberwell (OLM). Pat has been a teacher and will continue as a religious education consultant. She is also a school governor. In her spare time Pat, with her husband, runs a very successful jazz club in the crypt of St Giles. She and Les also share an interest in Morris Minors.

Steve Bishop, 41, is married to Carrie, and they have two daughters. He will be Hon Curate at Christ Church, Purley (OLM), where he has been very involved in preaching and leading services and general parish leadership. His work involves regulatory reporting for an international investment bank. Hobbies include hockey, gardening, reading and listening to music.

Roy Brenchley, 70, is a retired teacher. He will be Hon Curate at St Olave, Mitcham (OLM). He has been Secretary of the Management of St Mark's Family Centre for seven years. His musical talents include choir training and organ playing and he has made and played two harpsichords. He was licensed as a Reader in 1990.

Derek Brice, 63, is married to Ann and they have three children and five grandchildren. He will be Hon Curate at St Alban the Martyr, Cheam (OLM), where Derek's roles include Eucharist Minister and choir member. He is a Governor of a local church school. After many years with the Metropolitan Police, Derek now runs a contract maintenance company which he set up.

Godfrey Kaziro, 53, is married to Anne and they have two sons. He will be Hon Curate at St John, Waterloo (OLM), where he is a PCC member, as well as having key responsibilities within the Luganda Church which also worships at St John's. Godfrey was born in Kampala, Uganda and started his education at a missionary school built by his grandfather. Double-trained in medicine and dentistry, he came to the UK nearly 30 years ago to do postgraduate studies in surgery. He currently works as a specialised dentist in general practice.

Grahame Stephens, 68, is married to Sheila and they have three children. He will be Hon Curate at St Mary Magdalene w St Michael and All Angels, Woolwich (OLM), where he has been deeply involved for many years. Grahame retired five years ago after 40 years in the food industry. Since then, he has been a Volunteer Overseas Adviser to different third world countries including India and the Yemen. Grahame is a keen sportsman.

John Wates, 59, is married to Carol and they have two sons. He will be Hon Curate at St Margaret, Chipstead (OLM). John is a solicitor, and is also a magistrate and a member of Croydon Drug Action Team. He is a Director of the Philharmonia Orchestra and founded the British Horn Society. John has been a Reader in his church and has led many activities as well as editing the parish magazine.

Chris Baker, 38, is married to Rev Jeanette McLaren, Priest-in-Charge of St Paul's, Brixton. Chris will be stipendiary Assistant Curate at St Mark, Kennington. He has been a teacher in various schools, most recently in a primary school for pupils with special needs. His working life has included an apprenticeship in carpentry, working in special needs and living in a Christian community in south London.

Frances Baldwin, 53, is married to Keith and they have four children, two of whom are married. She will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate with the Caterham Team Ministry. She is a practice nurse at a GP surgery in south Croydon. She plays the flute and sings with a choir. In an attempt to keep fit she goes swimming.

Art Barron, 56, is a solicitor. He is married to Brenda and they have four children and three grandchildren. They enjoy walking especially in the Lake District. He will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at St Mary Magdalene w St Martin, Addiscombe, though he sees his ministry as including the secular work place.

Chris Davies, 51, has a BA in business studies and a diploma in drama. As an actor he is better known as Chris Scott, and will continue to seek opportunities to minister in his profession. He will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at St Saviour, Peckham, known as The Copleston Centre, a bike ride from his home in Forest Hill.

Simon Ellison, 51, is married to Martha and they have two sons at secondary school. He studied hotel management and spent several years in the merchant navy, where he met his wife. He will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at St John, Caterham Valley. Simon enjoys sailing and playing golf when time allows.

Anne-Marie Garton, 54, is an experienced social worker and is Director of WelCare, the Diocese of Southwark's support service for parents and children. She is married to Church Army Captain, Rev Jeremy Garton, who is Priest-in-Charge of St John's, Caterham Valley. Anne-Marie will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate with the Caterham Team Ministry.

David Hadley, 60, is married to Irene and they have five children. He is a retired head of art in secondary school, while his wife has her own law practice. He will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at All Saints, Kenley, and still leads a Bible study group in his previous parish. He has an interest in Islamic architecture and Middle Eastern history.

Gilly Pawson, 44, is married to Terry and has two sons. After working with Merton Chamber of Commerce Gilly established her own company, Ad Hoc Business Support, with business partner Jane Bretton. She will be stipendiary Assistant Curate with the Wimbledon Team Ministry.

Sue Peake, 59, trained as a social worker and is now a community development worker in an inner city and multi-ethnic estate. She will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at Christ Church and St John, Clapham.

John Philpott-Howard, 48, is a medical micro-biologist in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Guys, Kings & St Thomas' School of Medicine. He works as a consultant at Kings College Hospital and is involved with teaching, examining and pastoral care of students of medicine. He is also Chairman of a Liverpool charity that works with Liverpool teenagers and helps them to get qualifications and placements with shipping companies. John will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at Christ Church, Shooters Hill.

Richard Sewell, 39, is married to JulieAnn and they have two young children. He was for some years a regional mission adviser for the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG), working with local churches and volunteers in the South-East. Before that he had trained as a youth & community worker, but also worked for some years in his family's news distribution business in Devon. He will be stipendiary Assistant Curate at St Mary, Putney.

Ian Thompson, 41, who has a diploma in theology, will be non-stipendiary Hon Curate at St Peter, Walworth. He is a compliance officer at Woolwich Tax Office. His hobbies include music, reading, travelling and sports (football, tennis, athletics).

Geoffrey Thompson, 43, has an MA from Oxford and a Diploma in Theology. He has been an editor for 20 years, and his interests are railways, cooking and the work of Sir Ninian Comper (renowned Anglo-Catholic architect and designer). He will be stipendiary Assistant Curate at St Dunstan, Cheam.
