The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. & Rt Hon. Dr Rowan Williams, will preach at a special service to be held in Southwark Cathedral on Thursday 17 June at 2pm to mark the tercentenary of the Cathedral School of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, Southwark. He will also pronounce the blessing. The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler, will present a scroll to the school marking its tercentenary.
Children from the Cathedral School will take part in the service. Some will tell the story of the school, based on a book of the history of the school by Ruth Grater, and the school choir will sing an anthem. Children, parents and governors of the school will be involved in leading the prayers and a dramatic reading.
Sylvia Morris the Headteacher of the Cathedral School comments: 'The children, staff and governors are excited that the Archbishop is coming to meet with them on this historic occasion. It is a joy and a privilege to serve this successful school in the heart of the inner city where children continue to exceed our expectations. We feel proud and privileged to welcome the Archbishop to share in our service of celebration and thanksgiving.'
This is the first of a number of celebratory events marking this historic year in the schools life.
Notes for Editors
The Cathedral School of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, which stands now very close to its original site on the land which used to be the Duke of Suffolk's Palace, has 240 pupils aged from 3 -11. It is culturally diverse and popular in the area such that it is always over subscribed. It is a Beacon status school and in the past year it has received both Artsmark Gold and Active Sportsmark Gold awards.
Ends.
