PERUVIAN CURATE FOR NEW MALDEN

The Rev Edilberto (Eddie) Marquez, a native of Peru, is the new Curate-in-Charge of St John's, Kingston Road, New Malden. A congregation of 250 welcomed him on Sunday February 8 when the Archdeacon of Wandsworth, the Ven David Gerrard, licensed him at St John's during evening service. He is thought to be the only Peruvian priest in the Diocese.

Eddie has been curate at St John and St Stephen's, Reading, since 1994, but was previoulsy pastor of a Free Church in Oxford. He read theology and trained for the ministry in Lima, Peru, and for ten years from 1978 he worked there in various roles: in church planting, as a school chaplain, and then assistant and associate pastor in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.

In 1988 he spent a year learning English in Brighton, then came to the post at Oxford. In 1992-4 he trained as an Anglican at Stephen's House, Oxford and was ordained in 1994. Eddie is married to Elizabeth and they have three teenage children, Elizabeth, Martha and Samuel.
