New Church Centre and Vicarage proposed for Carshalton FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 13 September 1999 All Saints Church, Carshalton is planning a new church centre and rectory to provide more suitable facilities. If the plans are passed by the Borough of Sutton, the new centre will be a sensitively designed single storey building alongside the church. It will provide meeting rooms, kitchen and WCs, which the church currently lacks, and which will serve both the church and the community. The existing church hall (9/11 The Square, Carshalton) is a very old 'temporary' building in a serious state of disrepair. The new rectory will be more economical than the existing rectory. It will give convenient access for members of the public to see the Vicar, as well as giving privacy and security for the incumbent's family. There are also plans for an additional dwelling on this site, which will use it to better advantage in providing residential accommodation in the area. The existing rectory (2 Talbot Road), will be replaced by sympathetically designed maisonettes, which will provide new homes for the benefit of the Borough. The cost overall will not be known until further work is done, but it is estimated to be about £0.3 million, which will be raised partly by income from the development, partly from investments and by fund-raising. The Diocese of Southwark is acting with the Parochial Church Council in the planning application. The Diocesan Surveyor, Roger Pickett, says, "In all, the proposed scheme replaces one home with nine, in an urban area under pressure to provide more homes. It provides greatly improved community facilities. In addition it enhances the appearance of two sites in the cherished Carshalton Conservation Area." Ends For further information contact:
