Michaelmas Ordinations in Southwark

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 20 September 1999

An American woman who is a corporate lawyer married to a clergyman is one of eighteen people to be ordained in Southwark Cathedral on September 26. There is also a lady originally from Sierra Leone, as well as a former trade union representative who works in London Transport's bus repair department, nurses, teachers and a housing officer. They range in age from 26 to the sixties, and include at least one grandmother. In addition, fifteen other deacons will be ordained priest in three churches of the Diocese on Saturday 2 October.

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler, will ordain the eight women and ten men as deacons in Southwark Cathedral. The Rev Canon Giles Harcourt, Vicar of St Alfege, Greenwich, will conduct the retreat beforehand and preach at the ordination service.
