Church Cheques for Charities

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 7 January 2000

Churches and schools in Southwark Diocese have made donations totalling £95,500 to five charities as a result of the Bishop of Southwark's Lent Call in 1999. The Bishop, the Rt Rev Tom Butler presented cheques to these beneficiaries at a meeting of the Diocesan Synod before Christmas:

£10,500 (£5,000 had been given already) to Camberwell Choir School - set up in 1990 by the parishes of St Giles and St Matthew to provide out of school music tuition in a Christian setting. Many of the children come from backgrounds of great deprivation.

£15,000 to Biblelands - which helps to provide security, food, a good education and Christian love to Christian and Muslim children in the lands of the Bible.

£20,000 to IMPACT's project in Bangladesh to reduce the incidence of avoidable disabilities by immunisation or treatment.

£25,000 to the building of the new St David's Church in a fast-growing suburb of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

£20,000 to supply AIDS protection kits in eight African hospitals, through the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG).

In 2000 the Bishop will be calling on the parishes and schools to raise funds during the season of Lent for six projects. These are chosen from suggestions by people in the diocese, and include at least one local project as well as those in the developing world.
