Two Beacon Schools associated with Cathedral

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 19 June 2000

Southwark Cathedral's own local primary school has joined its sister secondary school in achieving Beacon status. The Dean of Southwark, the Very Rev Colin Slee, says: "This must surely be a first - two Beacon schools associated with one church."

Cathedral Primary School is the first Beacon primary school in the Borough of Southwark. Head Teacher Sylvia Morris is excited at the news and says: "Beacon Schools are there to assist those who are interested in collaborating with other schools and exploring ways to share, review and refine good practice. We can offer a diverse range of services including INSET, workshops, mentoring, consultancy and workshadowing."

St Saviour's and St Olave's Secondary School received Beacon status last year - among the very first to do so.

Commenting on the primary school's new listing, Chair of Governors Canon Helen Cunliffe says: "It's always lovely to be part of a success story, and our Cathedral School is certainly that. The past year has seen an outstanding OFSTED inspection, a mention in Chris Woodhead's list of the ninety-nine best primary schools in England, and now the receipt of Beacon status. Undoubtedly the Head Teacher is crucial to any school's success. In Sylvia Morris we have an inspiring leader, who has created a first-rate team of teachers, support staff, parents, governors, friends of the School - and of course the children themselves."

Ends.
