Petertide Ordinations in Southwark Diocese FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 30 June 2000 The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler, assisted by his three area bishops, will ordain three women and nine men as deacons at Southwark Cathedral on 2 July. Later that day five priests will be ordained at Croydon Parish Church, two at St Mark’s, Wimbledon, and three at St Laurence, Catford. These are curates who were ordained deacon last year. The Rev Canon Rodney Bomford, Vicar of St Giles, Camberwell, will conduct the retreat for the ordinands in the days before their ordination, and will preach at the Cathedral. Short biographies follow … Those to be ordained deacon at Southwark Cathedral on July 2: Sarah Archer, 34, trained at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. She previously trained as a doctor at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and since qualifying in 1989 she has held a number of posts, mainly in general practice in Cornwall. She will serve her curacy at St Barnabas, Dulwich. Mildred (Milly) Broome. A gifted musician, Milly is the music and religious education co-ordinator at Malden Parochial School (attached to St John's Church). She completed training on the Ordained Local Ministry Scheme in 1998, and has since then been exercising a ministry as an Authorised Lay Worker. Milly is married to Michael and has three grown up children. She will serve as non-stipendiary curate at St John the Baptist, Malden. Guy Collins, 25, has a first class honours degree in Theology from the University of St Andrews and combined training at Westcott House, Cambridge, with research leading to a PhD. His home parish was All Saints, Warlingham, and his curacy will be with The Barnes Team Ministry. Andrew Dodd, 32, read for a degree in Civil Engineering at Hatfield Polytechnic, and then joined a graduate training scheme in the Engineer's Department of Surrey County Council. After only six years he became Assistant District Engineer for Tandridge District Council. While training for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge, Andrew read for a degree in Theology. He will be Curate at St Edward, New Addington. Nichola (Nikki) Groarke, 37, trained at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. Nikki was brought up in Worcestershire and went to the University of Lancaster, where she read for a degree in German and French. Nikki went into publishing and joined the staff of Pergamon Press, where her work involved the marketing of medical journals. Nikki's husband Philip died of a brain tumour some years ago, and before starting training, Nikki worked in bereavement counselling. Curacy: The Ascension, Balham Hill. David Lawton, 38, is married to Kate. David grew up in Buckinghamshire and read Economics at Manchester. He embarked on a career in banking, but after marrying Kate they both went to work for Youth With a Mission, and managed a large house in Liverpool where a number of young people lived. Before training, David was full-time pastoral assistant in a parish in Liverpool. He was sponsored for training by the Diocese of Liverpool and trained at Cranmer Hall, Durham. Curacy: St John with Holy Trinity, Lewisham. Stuart Lee, 36, trained at St Stephen's House, Oxford. He has a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies from the Roehampton Institute and before going to theological college worked as an assistant stage manager in a West End theatre. His home parish was St Matthew's, West Wimbledon. Curacy: Holy Trinity, Eltham. James Poole, 29, is married to Caroline. He has a degree in Computer Science from Cambridge and before going to theological college he worked as a computer programmer for a firm of engineering consultants. James undertook the Aston Training Scheme, while continuing to worship in his parish church, Christ Church, Purley. He will serve his curacy at St Luke, Wimbledon. Martin Powell, 29, is married to Carys. Martin grew up in Chichester, and on leaving school worked as an auxiliary nurse at St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham and then moved to Devon to work, first in a nursing home, then in a home for adults with learning disabilities and finally as a café manager. Martin followed the Aston Training Scheme before going to St Stephen's House, Oxford. Curacy: Caterham Team Ministry. Mark Prentice, 26, has a degree in Theological Studies from the University of Exeter, and before going to theological college was a full-time youth worker in the parish of Christ Church, Gypsy Hill. Curacy: Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill. Marc Richeux, 33, is married to Suzanne and they have one daughter. Marc is the son of a French father and a British mother, and is bilingual in French and English. He has a degree in French and German from Manchester University. Before going to Trinity College, Bristol to train, he was a civil servant and his home parish was St Philip's Battersea, where Suzanne was Churchwarden. Curacy: St John, Plumstead. Philip (Phil) Warren, 34, is married to Heather; they have two daughters aged six and three. Phil has a degree in Religious Studies and History from St Mary's College, Cheltenham, and before going to theological college he was Head of Religious Studies and Philosophy at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith. Phil is the son of Norman Warren, formerly Rector of Morden and now Archdeacon of Rochester. His home parish was Christ Church, New Malden. Phil trained at St John's College, Nottingham. Curacy: St Mary Magdalen, Reigate. To be ordained priest at Croydon Parish Church, by the Bishop of Southwark and the Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Rev Wilfred Wood: John Birchall, 30, is married to Sarah; they have a son, Samuel, who is eighteen months old. John has a degree in Geography from the University of St Andrews. Before training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford he was a full-time pastoral assistant at St Mark's, Battersea Rise. He is serving his curacy at Christ Church, Purley. Johanna Brightwell, 35, is married to Rob, a civil servant who has a senior post in the Treasury. They have a daughter aged nine and a son aged eight. Johanna has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Bristol, and also a Master's degree in Pastoral Theology from the University of London. Her home parish was St Peter's Brockley, and before training for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge she worked as a part-time counsellor while studying for her Master's degree. Her curacy is at St John, Old Coulsdon. Mary Phillips has a grown-up son and daughter. Her home parish was St Mary's Balham, and before training for ordination at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, she was employed by the Wandsworth Community Health Trust as a health care support worker. She is serving her curacy at St Mildred, Addiscombe. Jonathan Westall, 32, is married to Rachel: they have two daughters aged three and under. He has a degree in Physics from the University of Nottingham, and before training for ordination taught that subject at Sutton Grammar School (having previously taught for two years at a mission station in Zimbabwe). His home parish in this diocese was All Saints, Clapham Park, though he was born and brought up in Cardiff. While training at Cranmer Hall, Durham he read for a degree in Theology. His curacy is at St Peter, St Helier. Sandra (Sandy) Conway, was ordained deacon in 1992, before ordination to the priesthood was open to women. She is married to Barry. Sandy is non-stipendiary curate at All Saints, Kenley. To be ordained priest at St Mark's, Wimbledon, by the Bishop of Kingston, the Rt Rev Peter Price: Stuart Hallam, 34, was born and brought up at Mansfield, in Nottinghamshire, and has a degree in Community and Youth Studies from St Martin's College, Lancaster. Before training for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge, he spent three years as a full-time youth worker at Emmanuel, South Croydon, which was his home parish. He is serving his curacy at St Mary, Battersea. Timothy (Tim) Mayfield, 41, is Curate at St Mark, Battersea Rise. Before training he worked in various fields, including being a caretaker and maintenance man at Holy Trinity, Brompton; a pastoral assistant at St Paul's, Onslow Square; and a lay pastor and director of studies at The Ascension, Balham Hill. He has a degree in Theology from Oak Hill College (which he attended as an independent student from 1990 to 1993), and he trained for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge; during his time there he did research for an MPhil degree. To be ordained priest at St Laurence, Catford, by the Bishop of Woolwich, the Rt Rev Colin Buchanan: Jacqueline (Jackie) Barry, 33, was born and brought up in Mauritius, and has a degree in Sociology and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Bordeaux (being bilingual in French and English). Before training for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge she taught at the Blackheath Bluecoat School, and worshipped at St John's, Blackheath. Curacy: Holy Trinity, Sydenham. Timothy (Tim) Linkens, 34, is married to Christina; they have a daughter aged four and a son aged two. He is the son of a minister in the Church of Scotland, though for much of his childhood his father ministered in the Presbyterian Church of Ireland, and his upbringing took place largely in Belfast. He has a degree in Naval Architecture from the University of Strathclyde, and before training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford he was employed as a ship surveyor by Lloyds Registry of Shipping. He is Curate at St John's, Blackheath. Peter Rouch, 34, is married to Tracey; they have a baby daughter. He has an Oxford degree in Zoology, as well as a Cambridge degree in Theology. Before training for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge he was on the staff of Barclays Bank, and reached a senior post in the head office in the City of London.
