Bishop to walk Meridian Line FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 25 September 2000 The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler, is going to take a special Millennium Walk along the Meridian Line from Lingfield, Surrey to the Millennium Dome. His walk will follow the line as nearly as possible where it passes through his Diocese, from Lingfield to Greenwich, calling at several churches and church schools on the way, and leaving out a section which falls in Rochester Diocese. He starts at Lingfield on Saturday 7 October and finishes at the Dome on Monday 9 October. He is inviting local people to join him for as much of the route as they can. Beating the bounds is a very old tradition for some churches, and the Bishop is doing a variation of it by visiting part of the Diocese on foot. He says, "With Greenwich in the Diocese of Southwark what better way of marking the Millennium year than by walking the Meridian Line? It leads us to the basis of all world time zones, and back to the origins of our calendar, the birth of Jesus Christ. I hope a lot of people will turn out to walk with me as I go through their parishes." The Bishop's schedule follows: Saturday 7 October Lingfield St Peter
