Civic Award for Church Race Worker

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 22 May 2001

Debbie WelchDebbie Welch, an adviser for minority ethnic concerns in Southwark Diocese, has been honoured for her work with the community following the murder of Damilola Taylor in North Peckham last year.

The London Borough of Southwark gave Debbie the Special Award for Promoting Racial Harmony and the Honorary Liberty of Camberwell on the nomination of the Southwark Civic Association. The citation says: "This nomination is made on behalf of a number of local residents who feel that following the tragic murder of Damilola Taylor last year, Ms Welch acted in a responsible and dignified manner and helped the community. Her actions show a great deal of strength and leadership."

Debbie says "I am very grateful to those who recommended me and pleased to receive this award. What matters most is that everyone in the community does their bit to bring an end to discrimination. We have to recognise different cultures and skills and continue working together to build a better environment."

Southwark Council held its annual Civic Awards on May 14 at St George's Cathedral, Southwark, and on the day sixty recipients received awards for outstanding work in the community.

Details of award winners can be obtained from Sonia Sutton, 020-7525 7303.

Ends.
