Petertide Ordinations in Southwark Diocese

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 26 June 2001

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler, assisted by his three area bishops, will ordain seven new deacons at Southwark Cathedral on Sunday 1 July.

Later that day twelve existing deacons will be ordained priests in the three Episcopal areas of the Diocese - three at St John's, Old Coulsdon, five at St John's, Waterloo, and four at St Mary Magdalene's, Peckham.

Canon Dr Christina Baxter, Chair of the House of Laity of General Synod and a member of the Archbishops' Council, will conduct the retreat before the ordination.

Those to be ordained deacon at Southwark Cathedral, with the parishes where they will serve as curates:

To be ordained priest at St John's, Old Coulsdon at 6.00 pm, by the Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Rev Wilfred Wood: (Parish where serving curacy also listed):

Those to be ordained deacon at Southwark Cathedral on July 1:

Patrick Bateman, 37, is married to Alison and they have two children. He was a freelance consultant in future commodities markets in the City before training at St John's College, Nottingham. He will serve his curacy at Holy Trinity Wallington.

Andrew Cinnamond, 30, grew up in Belfast. In London he worked as an operations analyst at an investment bank, then an investment manager. Trained at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, he will serve at Holy Trinity Clapham.

Nicola Coleman, 38, is married to Michael. She trained at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, and will serve as Assistant Curate at Croydon Parish Church. Nicola read English and Drama at Goldsmith's College and worked in the theatre for six years, mainly in the wardrobe department and stage management.

Stephen Leader, 37, was in retail sales then an auxiliary nurse. After qualifying fully as a nurse at the Royal London Hospital he became a senior nurse manager. He trained for the ministry at Ripon College, Cuddesdon and will serve his curacy at St Luke's, Battersea.

Darren Moore, 28, is married to Gladys. He read civil engineering at university. Having worked as lay assistant at Christ Church, Surbiton, he trained for the ministry at Oak Hill College and will serve his curacy at All Saints, Camberwell.

Lee Proudlove, 32, is married to Sally. He was a marketing and sales manager in television advertising before training at Trinity College, Bristol. He will serve as Assistant Curate at St Stephen with St Michael and All Angels, Wandsworth.

Richard Wilson, 34, is married to Victoria and they have two children. He used to manage a family centre project before training at Trinity College, Bristol. He will serve his curacy in the Morden Team Ministry.

CROYDON EPISCOPAL AREA - To be ordained priest at St John's, Old Coulsdon at 6 pm , by the Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Rev Wilfred Wood:

Andrew Dodd, 33, was Assistant District Engineer for Tandridge District Council before training for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge, and reading for a degree in Theology. He is Curate at St Edward, New Addington.

Martin Powell, 30, is married to Carys. He worked as a nurse in a hospice, a nursing home, then in a home for adults with learning disabilities and finally as a café manager. Martin prepared for ordination on the Aston Training Scheme and then went to St Stephen's House, Oxford. He is Curate in the Caterham Team Ministry.

Philip (Phil) Warren, 35, is married to Heather; they have two young daughters. Phil was a religious studies teacher before training at St John's College, Nottingham. He is Curate at St Mary Magdalen, Reigate. His father Norman is Archdeacon of Rochester.

KINGSTON EPISCOPAL AREA - To be ordained priest at St John's, Waterloo at 6.30 pm, by the Bishop of Southwark and the Bishop of Kingston, the Rt Rev Peter Price:

Mildred (Milly) Broome. Milly is the music and religious education co-ordinator at Malden Parochial School, attached to St John's Church, where she serves as non-stipendiary Curate. She and her husband Michael have three grown up children.

Guy Collins, 26, originally from Warlingham, took his first degree in theology and gained a PhD while training at Westcott House, Cambridge. He is Curate in the Barnes Team Ministry.

Nichola (Nikki) Groarke, 38, Nikki worked in publishing, marketing medical journals, and also in bereavement counselling. She trained at Ridley Hall, Cambridge and is Curate at The Ascension, Balham Hill.

James Poole, 30, is married to Caroline. He has a degree in Computer Science from Cambridge and before going to theological college he worked as a computer programmer for a firm of engineering consultants. James followed the Aston Training Scheme and is Curate at St Luke, Wimbledon.

Mark Prentice, 27, has a degree in Theological Studies from the University of Exeter, and before going to theological college was a full-time youth worker in the parish of Christ Church, Gypsy Hill. He is Curate at Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill.

WOOLWICH EPISCOPAL AREA - To be ordained priest at St Mary Magdalen, Peckham at 4 pm, by the Bishop of Woolwich, the Rt Rev Colin Buchanan:

Sarah Archer, 35, is serving her curacy at St Barnabas, Dulwich. Before training for ordination she practised as a doctor, and held a number of posts, mainly in general practice in Cornwall.

David Lawton, 39, is married to Kate, and is Curate at St John with Holy Trinity, Lewisham. He worked first in banking, but he and Kate both went to work for Youth With a Mission, and managed a house accommodating a number of young people. David was also full-time pastoral assistant in a parish in Liverpool before training at Cranmer Hall, Durham.

Stuart Lee, 37, has a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies and worked as an assistant stage manager in a West End theatre before training at St Stephen's House, Oxford. His curacy is at Holy Trinity, Eltham.

Marc Richeux, 34, is married to Suzanne and they have one daughter. Marc is the son of a French father and a British mother. Before going to Trinity College, Bristol to train, he was a civil servant. He is Curate at St John's, Plumstead.
