Women Overcome the Bishop! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 14 February 2002 The Bishop of Woolwich, the Rt Rev Colin Buchanan, was very conscious of the role that women play in the church when he licensed the Rev Naomi Whittle as Vicar of Christ Church, Shooters Hill on Sunday 3 February. Those taking part in the service included the Archdeacon of Lewisham, the Ven Christine Hardman, and the Rural Dean, the Rev Jean Wadsworth, not forgetting the two church wardens who were also women. The Bishop says, "There are only three women archdeacons in the country, and women rural deans are not all that common. I think this could well be a record!" Ends.
