The Prince of Wales to visit Southwark Cathedral 9 October 2002 The Prince of Wales will visit Southwark Cathedral on Friday 11 October to see the Millennium buildings opened by Dr Nelson Mandela in April last year. The £10.6 million project, largely funded by the Millennium Commission, has won a series of prestigious awards, among them a RIBA award as ‘one of the best buildings completed this year’ and most recently the Chartered Institute of Building silver medal for the Building Manager of the year. His Royal Highness will tour the churchyard, the Cathedral and the Millennium Buildings for an hour beginning at noon. He will inspect traditional flint work, stone masonry, glass painting and tile arches, see archaeology revealed during construction works and meet craftsmen who were engaged in the project. The Prince will be shown the work by the Cathedral architects, Richard Griffiths and Ptolemy Dean. The Dean of Southwark Cathedral, the Very Reverend Colin Slee will accompany His Royal Highness on the tour, after which His Royal Highness will meet members of the Cathedral staff. This event is covered by Royal Rota and applicants should apply for passes through the normal channels. For further information please contact: Wendy S. Robins
