peace prize for middle east leaders

23 October 2002

Southwark Cathedral will host a reception marking the presentation of the Coventry International Prize for Peace and Reconciliation to three senior Israeli and Palestinian peace workers, Rabbi Michael Melchior, Deputy Foreign Minister of Israel, Sheikh Tal El Sider, former Minister of the Palestinian Authority, and His Beatitude Michel Sabbah, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. The ceremony takes place today, Wednesday 23 October at a private reception at 7.00 pm in the new Garry Weston library.

Among those present will be the Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs Eileen Carey; the Bishop of Coventry, the Rt Rev Colin Bennetts; the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Cllr Ken Taylor; Canon Andrew White, Director of the International Centre for Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral, which has given this award, and the Deputy Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle. The Dean of Southwark, the Very Rev Colin Slee will welcome the guests.

The prize takes the form of a replica of the statue Reconciliation, depicting a kneeling man and woman hugging, which stands in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, and a framed certificate. Coventry Cathedral was destroyed by bombing in World War II and has developed a strong commitment to the struggle for peace.

Southwark Cathedral and the Council of Christians and Jews have also been involved in arranging this award ceremony.

Ends.
