Prayer for use at the vigil for peace The Dean, the Very Rev Colin Slee, commented: “Southwark Cathedral, like the other major churches, has a very full calendar of services and events, and it is not often that we can plan a joint day of this sort. We ask for your forgiveness. Lord of all the nations, we know that there are better ways than wars and oppression. We pray that men and women everywhere may seek out those ways and have the patience and persistence to follow them until justice and freedom are secure for us all. We ask for guidance. Lord of all the world, you have given us riches beyond imagining in the wealth of nature, give us also the riches of unselfishness that we may use those resources with equity, with care and for the welfare of all people. We ask for the grace of generosity. Lord of life, you blessed humanity with intelligence and free will, speak in the hearts and minds of the leaders of peoples that they may discern truth, turn from force and seek peace so that women and men may learn to live in tranquillity and trust. We ask for your wise judgement. Lord of time and eternity, this is a time of decision and fear. We pray for those who have responsibility in the United Nations, give them the humility of penitence, guide all thoughts of violence towards paths of peace and justice, convert all greed to generous justice and transform creation in the bright light of your eternal life-giving truth and love. We ask this in the name of him who knew suffering amongst us, even Jesus Christ Our Lord. AMEN.
