LONDON PRISONS WEEK SERVICE

Friday 14 November 2003

[see Report of Service]

The London and Southwark Dioceses Prisons and Penal Concerns Group in association with the Dean & Chapter of Southwark are hosting a service in Southwark Cathedral to mark Prisons Week, on Tuesday 18 November at 2.30pm.

Taking part will be former prisoners, prison staff and chaplains, magistrates and prison visitors and the congregation will include serving prisoners, prison staff and governors, representatives from voluntary sector agencies who work with prisoners and their families, and people from many parts of the British penal system. The address will be delivered by Anne Owers, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons. The Rt Rev Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark will also be present.

Canon Bruce Saunders, convenor of the group, says: "The purpose of the service is to pray for all those who are part of our penal system and to highlight the need for the community to remember and take greater responsibility for our prisons by building bridges between our prisons and our society."

Ends.
