Bishop of Southwark comments on Christian-Muslim relations

26 March 2004

Following press reports of a speech given by Lord Carey in Rome last night, the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler, said:

"The C of E and the wider Anglican Communion are engaged in dialogue with Muslims - as well as members of other faiths - at all kinds of levels and in many different contexts, locally, nationally and internationally. We have made a great deal of progress in recent years, building up relationships of trust and openness in which we can explore the common ground that we share and also discuss areas of disagreement. Sometimes opinions will be expressed robustly in either direction; if this can be handled with maturity and mutual respect, understanding can be deepened and our dialogue can emerge strengthened."

Ends.
