HAPPY 300TH BIRTHDAY
SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL SCHOOL

29 June 2004

The Most Rev. & Rt Hon. Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, joined Rt Rev. Dr Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark, The Very Rev. Colin Slee, Dean of Southwark, the headteacher, teachers, pupils and governors of St Saviour and St Mary Overie Cathedral School at Southwark Cathedral on Thursday 17 June to celebrate the school's tercentenary.

In welcoming people to the Cathedral the Dean asked the children various questions about the birthday celebrations for the school and reminded them that it had been the Archbishop's birthday earlier in the week and invited the congregation to join in singing happy birthday to the Archbishop - which they did with enormous pleasure!

The service continued with musical items from the Cathedral School Choir, a dramatized Bible reading, prayers and hymns. Parts of the story of the Cathedral School, from a book by Ruth Grater, were portrayed dramatically by the children.

In his sermon Archbishop Rowan spoke about the importance of community as we learn because we can listen to and learn from each other and grow up together in a way that we cannot when we are alone.

Bishop Tom presented the Chair of the school Governors with a Scroll commemorating the Cathedral School's Tercentenary. Following the service Bishop Tom said, 'It was a pleasure to take part in the tercentenary service of celebration of our Cathedral School. It is a shining example of all that is excellent in inner city education.'
