PETERTIDE ORDINATIONS IN SOUTHWARK

1 July 2004

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler will ordain six new deacons in Southwark Cathedral at 11am on Sunday 4 July 2004. They are all to be full-time stipendiary clergy. The churches where they will serve their curacy are also shown:

CROYDON AREA
Helen Mary Durant - Emmanuel, Croydon
Angela Maria Abike Gbebikan - St Stephen, Norbury & Thornton Heath
Simon Paul Stocks - St John the Evangelist, Old Coulsdon

KINGSTON AREA
Derek Adrian James Maddox - St Mark, Mitcham

Then later in the day the three area Bishops in Southwark Diocese will ordain as priests the following 10 who have been serving as deacons since last year in the churches shown:

Those to be ordained Deacon at Southwark Cathedral:

Helen Durrant, 51, is from Holy Trinity Redhill. She trained at Trinity College, Bristol. Before training she worked as a teacher and more recently as Regional Co-ordinator for the Prison Fellowship.

Angela Gbebikan, 48, is from St Alban's South Norwood. She worked as a Legal Assistant in the City before training at Westcott House, Cambridge. She has a teenage son.

Derek Maddox, 40, is married to Anne and has four children. He is from Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill and worked as manager of a centre for homeless people with London City Mission and previously in similar work with the Salvation Army. He trained at Trinity College, Bristol.

Neil Paxton, 44, is from St Paul Roundshaw. For a time he was the youngest Councillor in Britain (aged 21) for Blythe Valley, Northumberland. He worked as Client Advisor in the Employment Service before training at Ripon College, Cuddesdon.

Simon Stocks, 36, is married to Karen and has three children. He is from St Stephen's South Lambeth. He was a Civil Engineer working for ARUP before training at Trinity College, Bristol.

Carrie Thompson, 27, is from the Church of the Ascension, Blackheath, where she worked as a pastoral assistant while undertaking a counselling certificate at Birkbeck
College. She trained at St Stephen's House.

Those to be ordained priest at Croydon, New Malden or East Dulwich:

Corin Child, 30, is married to Nichola. He read English Language and Literature at Manchester University and trained for the ministry at Trinity College, Bristol. His previous experience includes a year as a window cleaner, 1998-99, and being a volunteer on construction projects in Bolivia, 1992. He was a schools RE worker in Lambeth Borough, 1995-98, and in 2000 an English language teacher for overseas students at PECAN, a church centre in Peckham.

Louis Darrant, 27, studied politics and travelled a good deal, working in various occupations. Having become a Christian, he went to Aberdeen University to read Philosophy but changed to Theology. While there he was student assistant to the Rector of the University, Clarissa Dickson-Wright. He worked in a London parish for a year before preparing for ministry at Mirfield College.

Andrew Davison, 30, who grew up in Yorkshire, read Chemistry at Oxford, earning a D Phil. He trained at Westcott House, Cambridge, with a six-month exchange period at the (Roman Catholic) Venerable English College, Rome. While training he kept up an involvement with a church-run soup kitchen in New York.

Matthew Fitter, 44, is married to Guen and they have two sons. He took a Psychology degree at the City of London Poly, then became a policeman before transferring to church work in Glasgow and Guildford. He gained a Diploma in Evangelism at Trinity College, Bristol, 1994-6.

Stephen Kuhrt, 35, is married to Katherine (Katie) and they have three children. After schooling at Archbishop Tenison's, Croydon, he read History at Manchester and trained as a teacher at the London Institute of Education. He then returned to Archbishop Tenison's where he became Head of Religious Studies. He trained for the ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford.

Liz Oglesby grew up in Hemel Hempstead, the daughter of a vicar. She gained a First in Religious Studies at Roehampton Institute, a BPh at Manchester and did further studies in Theology and Religious Studies at Cambridge. She trained for the ministry at Westcott House, Cambridge. Liz has worked in a number of short-term posts, and was a youth worker at one time on the Isle of Dogs.

James Percival, 30, is married to Kathryn and they have a son. After going to Tiffin School, Kingston-upon-Thames, James read History and Economics at Oxford. He then took a Diploma in Law at City University, London and went to the Inns of Court School of Law where he was Scholar of the Middle Temple. In 1999 he was called to the Bar. For three years he has been preparing for ministry at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, Oxford. James is an enthusiastic tenor saxophonist, having played with the Tiffin Swing Band until 1992. He is also a football referee and a keen sportsman.

Mark Powley, 29, is married to Ailsa. He went to Bury High School and Nottingham University, where he gained a BA in Theology, then to Birmingham University for a PGCE. He was an RE teacher for two years and has been involved in church-based youth work. He trained for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford.

Mark Pullinger, 50, is married to Linda and they have a grown up son and daughter. Brought up in Cambridge, Mark gained a music diploma at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology. He taught music privately and was Director of Music at a number of churches, first in Loughborough then at St Stephen's, South Lambeth and at St Mark's, Wimbledon. During this time he gained an MA in Pastoral Liturgy at Heythrop College, London University.

John Watson, 34, is married to Jackie and they have two young sons. John trained as a diamond sorter and valuer, but soon became involved with a Christian charity, working as a church and community leader in Birmingham and Darlington. From 1992-95 he trained as a Baptist minister, gaining a BDiv at Spurgeon's College, at the same time serving as minister to a local church. During a year in Peru, he helped set up a church project in Lima and preached and taught in the slums there, while also learning Spanish. Returning to London, he eventually joined PECAN, a church project in Peckham, as a community development worker, then as a manager. He has an MA at Trinity College, Bristol.
