MICHAELMAS ORDINATIONS IN SOUTHWARK

28 September 2004

Southwark Diocese has a larger than usual number of people to be ordained deacon this Michaelmas, bringing the total number of Deacons to be ordained in Southwark Diocese in 2004 to 32.

New deacons

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler will ordain eleven new Deacons in Southwark Cathedral at 11am on Sunday 3 October 2004. The churches where they will serve their curacy are shown:

The Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Rev. Nick Baines will ordain five new Deacons at 11am at Croydon Parish Church.

The Bishop of Kingston, The Rt Rev. Dr Richard Cheetham, will ordain ten new Deacons at 11am at Mitcham, St Barnabas. Mitcham

Note: Stipendiary means they receive the equivalent of a salary, NSM means non-stipendiary and OLM means Ordained Local Ministers, who are also non-stipendiary but can only serve in their local church.

SHORT BIOGRAPHIES

Latiff Adenekan, 66, was born in Nigeria and is married to Mavis with three grown-up children. His hobbies are reading and watching television - Songs of Praise, football and gymnastics.
Holy Trinity & St Matthias, Tulse Hill (OLM)

Mark Budden, 43, works at the Home Office Health and Welfare Department as a Welfare Officer. He enjoys the theatre and cinema and spending time with friends.
Mitcham, St Barnabas (NSM)

Ruth Burge-Thomas, 38, is a solicitor who enjoys reading, cinema, cooking, entertaining and music. She has a degree in History and Classics; is married to Daniel and they have two children.
Clapham, Holy Spirit (NSM)

Joan Burkitt-Gray, 57, works as journalist and has degrees in sociology and zoology as well as Diploma in Personnel Management. Married to Alan with three children she and her family enjoy visiting museums and galleries and walking.
Lee, St Margaret (NSM)

Rachel Carnegie, 42, works as a Consultant on development matters and has a degree in English and a Masters Degree in Education. She is married to Mark Golding and they have two children.
Richmond Team (NSM)

Anne Clarke, 53, is the daughter of a parish priest in Hither Green and has spent most of her life in East Dulwich. She was an English teacher in secondary schools until 1998. She has been a magistrate since 1990 and is a member of the SENDIST Tribunal (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). She enjoys reading, travelling, walking, spending time with friends and family. She is married to Peter Bibby.
St John the Evangelist, East Dulwich (OLM)

Jonathan Croucher, 37, works as a solicitor following a degree in economics and law. Married to Yvette they have three small children including twin boys. When he has the time he likes to listen to music and read and aspires to be better at DIY and gardening!
Lee, The Good Shepherd with St Peter (NSM)

William David, 47, has spent most of his life in Eltham and has had a long involvement with St Barnabas. He is senior medical photographer at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup. William is a keen sports fan particularly of cricket. He enjoys travelling to varied destinations and experiencing different cultures and societies - quite possibly including a test match.
St Barnabas Eltham (OLM)

Paul Goodridge, 50, works as a Learning and Development Manager for the newly formed Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health, a body which supports forums of local people who monitor the provision of health services. Married to Elizabeth, he has four children varying in age from eight to 23. His ministry at St Dunstan's will focus on the needs of young families. His wife is a Reader at the church and his younger children sing in the choir. He enjoys reading and listening to music and he is being encouraged to go out and do more bike riding with his family.
St Dunstan's, Cheam (OLM)

Emmanuel Ilori, 47, was born in Nigeria. He trained in England as a marine engineer and now works as a Marine Engineer Surveyor for an International Maritime Regulatory Body. He is married to Grace and they have four children. Hobbies include reading and video editing.
New Addington, St Edward (NSM)

Marie John, 56, was born in St Lucia, and has two sons and four grandchildren. After the birth of her children, she became involved in working with local voluntary organisations, in particular setting up a Saturday school for black children. Marie was commissioned as a Southwark Pastoral Auxiliary in 1996. Marie enjoys reading and organising entertainment events, for herself and for the church.
St George, Camberwell (OLM)

Carol Jones, 59, works as a dental nurse in a practice in Shirley, where she has lived for most of her life. Married to Eric, she has a grown-up son and daughter and three grandchildren. During her many years at St George's Carol has been (among other things) a PCC member and churchwarden and run the Over 60s Club and the St George the Martyr Neighbourly Care Scheme. She was commissioned as a Southwark Pastoral Auxiliary in 1991 and licensed as a Reader in 1998.
St George the Martyr, Shirley (OLM)

Patrick Jordan, 35, has worked for much of his working life in retail selling books and most latterly as an administrative assistant in the Bishop's Office here in Southwark Diocese. He enjoys reading and spending time with his family and is married with two children.
Charlton United Benefice (Stipendiary)

Annie Kurk, 48, is a recruitment consultant in the PR industry. Married to David and with two teenage children, Annie spends her spare time as governor of St Cecilia's, a new Church of England secondary school in Wandsworth.
St Stephen, Wandsworth and St Michael & All Angels, Southfields (OLM)

David Larlee , 26, has recently finished studying for a Bachelor of Theology degree at Oxford. He came to Britain from Canada to train for ordination and is to stay and serve his title in this country. Selected for Ordination in Canada he is to be ordained here, by the Bishop of Southwark with letters dimissory which means that the Bishop of Southwark is ordaining him on behalf of the Bishop of Fredricton, Canada. He is recently married to Rachel .
St Mark Battersea Rise (NSM)

Rosemarie Mallett, 45, was born in Barbados and has worked as a medical researcher and has a degree in History and French and PhD in Sociology. She enjoys sport of every kind.
Brixton, Christ Church (Stipendiary)

Robert Norbury, 43, is married to Paula and has lived in Eltham Park since the age of four and has worshipped at St Luke's for many years. He has acquired valuable experience of other traditions through his current work as Parish Administrator at St Stephen's Rochester Row and prior to that at St James' Piccadilly. He was licensed as a Reader in 2000.
St Luke, Eltham Park (OLM)

Trudy Payne, 56, is a civil servant in the Home Office. Prior to this she had spent 17 years as a French teacher. Born in East Yorkshire, Trudy has lived in London since her university days at Kings College and has worshipped at St Stephen Clapham Park for most of that time. She is a voracious reader, keen cook and fair-weather gardener. She enjoys eating out and needlework. She has been married to Robin, now retired, since 1975.
St Stephen, Clapham Park (OLM)

Mark Smith, 44, has a degree in law and works as a government lawyer. He is married to Gillian and they have two children. He enjoys walking, cycling, photography and wine making as well as the theatre and going to concerts.
East Wickham, St Michael the Archangel (NSM)

Irene Thomas, 62, was born and brought up in Bexleyheath; Irene has worshipped at St Michael's since childhood. She worked for an insurance company in the City for many years before joining the staff of the local church school as a clerical assistant and clerk to governors. Since retiring she has continued to work as clerk to governors and now also undertakes some invigilating work at the local Grammar School.
St Michael, East Wickham (OLM)

Alison Warner, 60, works as a Trust Fund-raiser for Oxfam having graduated in business and journalism from the University of New York. Having spent most of her adult life working abroad she is interested in travel and international and current affairs as well as music theatre and the arts.
Waterloo, St John with St Andrew (NSM)

David Weightman, 57, is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and runs his own building surveying consultancy business. He is married to Karen and they have two married daughters and a grandson. He has been a Parish Councillor since 1987 and a District Councillor since 1994. He was Chairman of Tandridge District Council in 2002/03. He plays golf occasionally, enjoys DIY, gardening, photography and watching most sport.
St Mary, Oxted (OLM)

Leslie Wells, 43, is married to Stephanie and they have five children (the youngest of whom Les delivered). Les' ministry at St Peter, St Helier includes working with children - he has recently started a boys group for 10-14 year olds, as well as helping to run a Christian summer camp. He has also been a churchwarden, PCC vice-chair, Alpha group leader and deanery synod representative. Les is a day service support worker supporting adults with learning difficulties. In his spare time, Les enjoys reading, walking the dogs, music, singing, the cinema, bowling and going to football.
St Peter, St Helier (OLM)

Cathy Wiles, 53, is Team Leader of the Chaplaincy team at S.W London and St George's Mental Health Services NHS Trust. She has a BEd and a Diploma in Pastoral Counselling. Her two sons are now grown up.
Wandsworth Common, St Mary Magdalene (NSM)

Anne Williamson, 47, was born in the United States of American and came to England when she married Michael and they now have two sons. She has a degree in international finance and enjoys reading, swimming and sailing.
Blackheath, St John (NSM)

Josh Zvimba, 44, was born in Zimbabwe and is as a London City Missioner, working as manager of the St Mary Magdalene Church Centre. He has diplomas in economics and development and sociology and enjoys reading walking and listening to classical and religious music. He is married to Janice and they have five children.
