REGENERATION ADVISER FOR SOUTHWARK DIOCESE

Tim Scott13 October 2004

The Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark has appointed the Rev. Timothy (Tim) Scott to be the Regeneration Adviser for the Diocese of Southwark.

This new half-time appointment is an exciting development for Southwark Diocese and is a mark of the serious attention that the Diocese pays to the social changes and developments happening within the boundaries of the Diocese and beyond. He will hold this brief as Rector of Christ Church, Southwark and was instituted and inducted at a service there on Saturday 9 October.

Tim Scott, 43, has spent much of his ministry in urban environments and dealing with regeneration projects. Following a degree in theology at Exeter University (1980-83) Tim Scott worked with the homeless in the Kings Cross area of London. He trained at Westcott House, Cambridge (1984-87), was ordained Deacon in 1987 and Priest in 1988. During his time at Westcott House he once again worked with the homeless in London undertaking placements at St Martin-in-the-Fields and in the Victoria area.

He served his title at St Edward, Romford in the Diocese of Chelmsford (1987-1989) and was then Community Priest in Walthamstow in the Diocese of Chelmsford (1989-94). Whilst there he was responsible for the local churches' work on two housing estates which were to undergo regeneration. He was then Priest in Charge (1994-97) and then Vicar (1997- 2001) of Holy Trinity and St Augustine, Leytonstone in the Diocese of Chelmsford. He worked extensively during this period with those involved in the Housing Action Trust which was responsible for the complete rebuilding of the main housing estate in the parish. He also worked closely with a Single Regeneration Budget development and in his capacity as an Assistant Area Dean liaised with the Local Authority and Health Authority. From 2001 he has been Area Education Adviser and Team Leader for the Bradwell Area of the Diocese of Chelmsford.

He is married to Linda, also a priest, and they have one son.

In speaking of his appointment Tim Scott says, 'I am very much looking forward to working in a parish once again and getting to know the people of Christ Church and it will be especially good to get back into the kind of urban situations in which I spent much of my earlier ministry. I am also excited by the prospect of helping the Diocese of Southwark to respond seriously and in a thoughtful way to the many issues facing those communities in which regeneration is happening or about to happen.'

Bishop Tom comments, 'Tim Scott brings much experience in working with regeneration and at this exciting time of development in the Diocese I am pleased to welcome him into the team that will advise me and the Area Bishops and Archdeacons and help local priests tackle these issues in the most constructive way'.
