BISHOPS TO PRISON

22 December 2004

The Bishop of Southwark and his two area bishops currently in post will each visit a prison on Christmas morning and lead a service for prisoners and staff.

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler will go to Belmarsh, Bishop of Kingston, the Rt Rev Dr Richard Cheetham, will visit Wandsworth Prison, where he will also license the Rev Angus Galbraith as the new Prison chaplain and the Rt Rev. Nick Baines, the Bishop of Croydon will visit Brixton prison.

Bishop Tom comments, 'It is good to be able to go and share worship with prisoners and staff in some of our prisons. The Christmas message of forgiveness, peace and reconciliation is for all and my colleagues and I are always pleased to share in the important work undertaken by our prison chaplains'.

There is no Bishop of Woolwich at present, as the Rt Rev Colin Buchanan retired earlier in the year and his successor has not yet been named.
