NEW HONORARY CANONS FOR SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL

18 February 2005

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler, collated and installed five new Honorary Canons at Southwark Cathedral on Sunday 6 February.

The new Canons with Bishop Tom

Canon John Ackland, ordained in 1982, served various honorary curacies in Southwark Diocese before becoming a Chaplain of Southwark Cathedral in 1998 and then Priest-in-Charge of Christchurch, Forest Hill and St George, Perry Hill in 2003.

Canon Ivelaw Bowman, ordained in 1997, has served at St Andrew’s, Stockwell Green and as a healthcare Chaplain at The Lambeth Hospital and his stall is named after Archbishop Randall Davison.

Canon Merv McKinney, ordained in 1981, has been Vicar of St Francis and St Mary West Wickham since 2002 and is also Area Dean of Croydon Addington. He was installed into the Richard Fox stall.

Canon Nicky Tredennick, ordained in 1990, has been vicar of St Matthew’s Redhill since 1997 and has also served as Rural Dean of Reigate. Her stall is named after Elizabeth Newcommen.

Canon Jeffry Wilcox, ordained in 1966, was installed into the John Bunyan Stall. He has been rector of St Leonard’s Streatham for over 20 years and has had a spell as Rural Dean of Streatham.

In his sermon, Bishop Tom noted that the people who gave their names to the stalls into which the Canons have been installed reflected a wide range of ministry and that the new Canons had a wide and varied ministry in the Diocese. Each new Canon has a stall appropriate to their ministry and he hoped that they would continue to witness in word and loving service.

The Very Rev. Colin Slee, Dean of Southwark, said of their appointment, “I look forward to working with them in the College of Canons and sharing the Cathedral’s ministry with them’

Ends.

Note to Editors:
An Honorary Canonry is an honour conferred by the Diocesan Bishop as an expression of appreciation of service to the Diocese. The new Canons – who are each allocated a stall in the Choir Stalls - will assist in the governance of the Cathedral in an advisory capacity and promote it in the wider Diocese. Each Canon is invited to celebrate the Eucharist in the Cathedral on the day allocated to their particular stall.
