A STATEMENT FROM THE
BISHOPS OF SOUTHWARK DIOCESE 15 July 2005 We are saddened and distressed by the atrocities which happened in London a little over a week ago. At the same time, we have been heartened by the swift and effective response of the emergency services, and by the determination of ordinary people to carry on with their lives. All over our capital, throughout the country and across the world people gathered in silent tribute yesterday. At this time we want to add our voices to those who are continuing to work for understanding and harmony between people of different races and faiths. We urge people of all communities to work together to ensure that such acts of violence do not happen here again, in London or elsewhere in the country. Those who attacked our city wanted to sow distrust and division among us; the best and most Christian response we can make to them is to show our confidence in one another by meeting and working together for peace and justice. We commit ourselves to continuing to do this and urge others to join us in seeking the common good. Our prayers and the prayers of all the congregations in our Diocese continue to be with all those affected by these events and especially with the families and friends of those whose lives have been so needlessly lost. We are praying also for all who bear authority in our nation and city, and for the police and all responsible for our security, in the challenging times that lie ahead. Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark Ends. Diocesan
