ARCHBISHOP OF CAPE TOWN TO PREACH AT SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL

28 September 2006

The Most Revd Njongonkulu Ndungane, the Archbishop of Cape Town, will be preaching at the 11am Choral Eucharist in Southwark Cathedral on Sunday 1 October.

In a statement a week ago the Archbishop was strongly critical of those who seek to break away from the Anglican Communion saying they risk creating 'episcopes vagantes' - vagrant Bishops. He clearly disassociated himself and the church in South Africa from these moves saying that those who claim to speak for the ‘Global South' do not have the right to do so. (See www.anglicancommunion.org/acns/ digest/index.cfm?years=2006&months=9&article=707&pos=#707 and www.episcopalchurch.org/3577_78023_ENG_HTM.htm)

On Tuesday evening October 3rd the Archbishop will be launching a major initiative for monitoring aid to Africa. 'African Monitor' will seek to make recipients of aid more transparently accountable for the money they receive and track the bank accounts in to which aid is placed. It will be run by African leaders who are recognised people of high ethical standards and in that respect unlike any previous attempt to monitor aid budgets and expenditure. The initiative has already won strong international support.

He is the latest in a series of Archbishops to preach at the Cathedral as part of its anniversary celebrations in 2006 - following the Archbishops of Canterbury and Canada and the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the USA - with the Most Revd Orlando Santos de Oliviera, Bishop of Southern Brazil and Primate of the Episcopal Anglican Church of Brazil still to come on Sunday 15 October.
