MOHEGAN MEMORIAL SCULPTURE
NEARS UNVEILING 10 November 2006 A five tonne sculpture has been commissioned from Peter Randall Page. It is to be a memorial to the Mohegan tribal chieftain Mahomet Weyonomon who was buried in the churchyard at Southwark Cathedral in 1736. The sculpture is in the form of a boulder made from pink granite taken from the New England reserve of the Mohegan tribe. This form of memorial was chosen because it is the indigenous custom, when a Mohegan chieftain dies, to name a boulder in his honour. Peter Randall Page, the sculptor, specialises in carving natural rocks with respect for their shape and form, and in July 2005 he visited Connecticut, New England, with the Dean to select the boulder. The boulder will be lifted into place in Southwark Cathedral’s gardens by crane on Tuesday 14 November, starting at approximately 7.00am, prior to its unveiling on Wednesday 22 November by HM the Queen who will be accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. Ends. Diocesan
