OPPORTUNITY TO MEET MOHEGAN TRIBAL CHAIRMAN

20 November 2006

The press are invited to come and meet Bruce ‘Two Dogs’ Bozsum, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council, at Southwark Cathedral at 3.30pm on Tuesday 21 November. He will be there in preparation for the Queen’s visit, the following day, to unveil the memorial to the Mohegan Chieftain Mahomet Weyonomon who was buried in the grounds of Southwark Cathedral in 1736.

Mahomet Weyonomon came to Britain with two English supporters to petition King George II for justice as the English settlers in New England encroached upon their tribal lands. However, he died of smallpox before meeting the King and although he died in Aldermansbury he could not be buried there as he was a foreigner. So he was buried in the grounds of what is now Southwark Cathedral.

The memorial which is to be unveiled is the work of the sculptor Peter Randall Page and is made of a granite boulder from the Mohegan tribal lands. It is hoped that the memorial will encourage those who see it today to remember the injustice in the treatment of the Mohegans and encourage us all to behave better in the future.

Bruce ‘Two Dogs’ Bozsum would be pleased to meet journalists and talk about the significance of this unique memorial.

To help with planning, it would be useful if you could advise us if you are hoping to attend. Please call Steve Harris on 020 7939 9437/07949 679401 or e-mail: steve.harris@southwark.anglican.org

Ends.
