SLAVERY – THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A conference to commemorate the abolition of the slave trade

3 May 2007

This two-day conference, to be held at St John’s Waterloo on 15 - 16 June, will focus on the legacies of slavery which are still with us today, as well as some examples of slavery as it exists today. The conference makes space for a look at theological aspects of the subject. It is designed to be a springboard for individuals and organisations to take action that will have a lasting impact.

Organised by the Diocese of Southwark Black and Minority Ethnic Forum, the Baptist Church of Great Britain, the Methodist Church, and the set all free Committee of Churches Together in England it has an impressive line-up of speakers including Professor James Walvin of York University, and Dr Anthony Reddie of the Queens Foundation.

The plenary sessions will explore the abolition of slavery; the need for an apology and reparations; current economic exploitation of countries in Africa, the Caribbean and elsewhere; and theology of slavery. Workshops on legacies include racism in churches, relationships between African and Caribbean people, black identity and slavery, and cultural legacies. A second stream of workshops deals with people trafficking, slavery in the Sudan, bonded labour, and the Dalits. Time will be allowed for dialogue between delegates to the conference and speakers; and a report, which can be used as a resource, will be published following the conference.

slavery and its abolition; reflect on the consequences of slavery; and respond to the challenges slavery presents in our time.

Ecumenical worship under girds the conference.
