NEW HONORARY CANONS FOR
SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL
The
Rt Rev Dr Tom Butler, The Bishop of Southwark and the Very Rev
Colin Slee, Dean of Southwark, installed and collated five new
Honorary Canons at Southwark Cathedral at Evensong on Sunday 28
October, the Feast of Ss Simon & Jude.
They are:
Giles Goddard - John Gower Stall
Hilary Johnson - John
Harvard Stall
Geoff Mason - William Shakespeare Stall
Bill Musk - Edward Alleyn Stall
Christopher Wheaton - Peter de Roches Stall
At
the same service the Bishop and Dean licensed and installed the
Rev. Anna Macham as the Succentor of Southwark Cathedral, who
was additionally licensed as Chaplain of Guy’s Campus, King’s
College London on Tuesday 30 October.
The Rev. Roger Hill and the Rev. Michelle Thornton were also
installed as Cathedral Chaplains.
In his address Bishop Tom referred to the Saints whose feast day
was being celebrated and noted that Saint Jude was best known
for being the patron saint of hopeless causes. He assured the
congregation that being a minister in the Church of England was
not a hopeless cause, even if the media seem to see it as a
favourite ‘Aunt Sally’. He went on to illustrate where the newly
installed Canons, Chaplains and the Succentor were all involved
in ministry in areas that were also not ‘hopeless causes’. Three
of the Canons work in thriving parish ministries of widely
differing traditions and location, one of the Chaplains and the
Succentor are involved with young people at a time when
ignorance of the Gospel works in the Church’s favour as a lot of
young people haven’t heard the story before. Another of the
Canons meets with those who feel they are called to ordained
ministry and advises bishops whether that call should be tested
further.
Honorary Canons
An Honorary Canonry is an honour conferred by the Diocesan
Bishop as an expression of appreciation of service to the
Diocese. The new Canons, who are each allocated a stall in the
Choir Stalls, will assist in the governance of the Cathedral in
an advisory capacity and promote it in the wider Diocese. Each
Canon is invited to celebrate the Eucharist in the Cathedral on
the day allocated to their particular stall.
Ends.
