Santley Street
Brixton
London

Built: 1881
Architect: W G Habershon & E Fawckner
Diocesan Record Office: London Metropolitan Archives

The original church of Brixton, St Paul was made redundant in 1981 and exchanged for the present church which belonged to the Seventh-Day Adventists.

Description

"An eloquent Irishman, the Rev G Blake Concannon, began to minister in an iron church, and then transferred to a larger one: he then decided to build a permanent church. St Paul’s was erected, at a cost of £16,000, to provide a greater number of sittings than any other church in the neighbourhood. The architects were W G Habershon and E Fawckner; the builder was James of Gloucester. It was consecrated on 29 July 1881. Of yellow brick, banded with red: large and unattractive. The nave has a hammer-beam roof; there were galleries, but they have been taken down."
