Emmanuel

Sorry - picture not available

Camberwell Road
London
SE5

Built: 1841 - 42
Architect: Thomas Bellamy
Diocesan Record Office: London Metropolitan Archives

The church was made redundant and leased to the Greek Orthodox Church in 1965. The building is within the present parish of Camberwell, St Michael & All Angels, & All Souls with Emmanuel.

Description

"Built in 1841-2, after St Giles’s had been burned down. The architect was Thomas Bellamy, and the cost was £4,899. It is brick Norman, with two low eastern towers flanking the sanctuary. The inside was done up by Frederick Etchells between the Wars. It became unsafe, and was closed. It was proposed at one time to use the Catholic Apostolic Church in Camberwell New Road (by J and J Beicher) as the parish church; but it has been taken over by the Greek Orthodox. The parish is now united with All Souls’."

(from 'Parish Churches of London', Basil F L Clarke, Batsford, 1966)
