Sorry - picture not available

Dulwich Road
East Brixton
London
SE24

Built: 1867 - 68
Architect: E C Robins
Diocesan Record Office: London Metropolitan Archives

The church of East Brixton, St Jude was made redundant in 1980 and has been converted into a furniture warehouse. The building is in the parish of Brixton, St Matthew with St Jude.

Description

"The site for this church was given by Joshua Blackburn in 1862. There was a competition for the design which was won by E C Robins. The foundation stone was laid on 3 August 1867, and the church consecrated on 28 October 1868. The builder was John Kirk of Woolwich. The cost was £7,900. It is a large and rather dreary church, of Kentish rag and Bath stone; cruciform, with a very low tower and spire in the angle of the transept, facing the road. The chancel was damaged by fire in 1923, and restored by G H Fellowes Prynne.

The church was damaged by bombing in 1940. On 24 May 1952 the south aisle was rededicated for use as a church: the rest was brought back into use later."
