Nunhead
The church was declared redundant in 2001 and has been sold to another Christian denomination. The building is within the parish of Nunhead, St Antony with St Silas. Description The church was originally built in 1878 to the designs of Ewan Christian, architect. It was destroyed by bombing on the nights of 27th and 28th December 1940 and rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1957. The building was shortened by constructing the new west gable one bay in to the original. The architect for the reconstruction was Lawrence King.
The church is constructed in red brick with stone dressings. The internal arcading to the aisles is in stone. The nave roof is clad in metal sheet, with other pitched roofs in natural slate, with the exception of the flat roof to the SW porch which is in built up roofing felt and chippings. Internally the walls have been rendered with roughcast textured rendering. There are wood block floors throughout the church and the exposed rafters, purlins and roof boarding have been painted. There is a fibrous plaster vaulted suspending ceiling to the nave and chancel. |
