Ivydale Road
Nunhead
London
SE15

Built: 1902 - 27
Architect: J E K & J P Cutts
Diocesan Record Office: London Metropolitan Archives

The church was declared redundant in 2001 and was demolished as it suffered from severe subsidence.  A new church of Nunhead, St Antony with St Silas is being built on the site.

Description

The church was built to the designs of the Architects JEK and JP Cutts. Building work was commenced in 1902 and completed the following year. A floor plan and perspective drawing are lodged in the records of the Incorporated Church Building Society at Lambeth Palace Library. The original design featured a north west tower. In the event funds were short and the baptistry was not built until 1913, the vestries were built in 1927 and the tower was omitted entirely.

The accommodation comprises nave, north and south aisles, chancel, south east chapel, organ chamber, baptistry and western porches, choir vestry, priests vestry and WC.

The church is built in an area where the subsoil is London clay and the site is surrounded by pollarded trees set in the pavements. The church is currently closed for worship as it has suffered from severe structural movement which is expressed in cracking in masonry walling and unevenness and undulation of the floor in the chancel, nave, aisles and other areas.
