Blackfriars Road
London

Built: 1738-41/1890-91
Architect: James Horne / C R Baker King
Diocesan Record Office: London Metropolitan Archives

The church was destroyed by enemy action in 1941.  A replacement church was constructed in 1957 - 59.

Description

"The church was founded and endowed by John Marshall, of Southwark, and consecrated on 17 December 1671: the tower and spire were completed in 1695. It soon became unsafe, and in 1737 Marshall’s trustees applied to Parliament for authority to rebuild it, with £2,500 that had accumulated in the trust. A new church was built in 1738-41, almost certainly designed by James Horne. In 1802 it was closed as dangerous, and in the next year the vestry agreed to rebuild it. They applied to Parliament, but a committee of the Commons decided that rebuilding was unnecessary. In 1811 the vestry agreed to repair the church (Robinson, surveyor) and erect north and south galleries. S S Teulon added an apse in 1870-1, and in 1890-1 C R Baker King remodelled the interior and built a Romanesque chancel.

The church was damaged in 1941, and the tower and most of the nave disappeared. A smaller church has been built at the east of the site, by R. Paxton Watson and Barry Costin: the contractors were Dove Bros. It was opened on 24 February 1960. There is glass by Frederick Cole."
